The Sweet, Creative, Soulful sound of Andrea Brachfeld
Andrea Brachfeld and her group the Phoenix Rising Latin Jazz Ensemble.

From the melting pot that is known as New York City, we have found a gem of an artist and recording. Andrea Brachfeld should not be a new name to all you savvy Latin Music fans. Her talents can be found on recordings by the very hip and swinging "Charanga 76" band. She was very involved in the creation of that group's sound and direction. She has recorded and performed with many top-notch groups including Tipica New York, Benito Sextet, Joe Quijano, Orquesta Broadway, Tipica Novel, Tito Puente and Machito. Whew..!

Busy lady uh? Indeed and talented. Having been influenced by and studying with the great Hubert Laws of Jazz Crusader fame, when you hear Andrea's music you can't help from saying "mmmmm that is sweet." The tone and command she has on the flute is exceptional. For some reason or another women, especially in Latin Music, have not been given the proper credit or recognition. Now I don't want to get into that issue here however, one does not need to listen much to the sound that Andrea has created to realize she is tremendously talented. Just take a listen to Andrea's music and you will agree with me that she deserves attention and respect. She is able to create such a mellow and entrancing sound with unique improvisation.

In this collection of superb material Andrea takes us all along for a musical ride filled with beauty and grace. "Remembered Dreams" has quickly become one of my favorite discs and definitely one of the great finds of the year. Andrea & The Phoenix Rising Latin Jazz ensemble have managed to create some sweet sounds for the ear. All of the tunes on this recording are original material. Here are some names you may remember or be familiar with Bob Quaranta on piano, who has worked with the great Mongo Santamaria for years; Lincoln Goines on bass who has worked with many of the top names in Jazz, most notably with Dave Valentin. The recording also features some very steady playing by the likes of Taurey Butler on Piano, Kip Reed on bass, Karl Latham and Kim Plainfield on Drums and Chuggy Carter and Louis Bauzo on Congas.

Tunes include the up-tempo and spicy "Le Metro J" did I mention Andrea is also fluent in both Spanish and English? No? Well, she is and she speaks a mean flute as well. Another favorite of mine is the melodic "Quatemala's Dance" which features some nice interplay between Bob Quaranta and Andrea. This tune reminded me of the early sound of Dave Valentin, who is also a big influence on Andrea's sound.

"Remembered Dreams" the title track, does not disappoint. In fact, it is the kind of tune that will allow you to close your eyes, listen and smile. "Osiana" is next and I am not clear of the meaning of the name. However, I am clear that this beautiful sassy tune is deserving of such a lovely title. You will be toe tapping in no time. "Latin Sunset" , "Afro-Jade" and "Mojivin Sun", a delicate cha-cha without a doubt, allow Andrea and band a chance to get a little creative and funky. Last but not least "Oceanside" evokes a warm feeling of happiness and joy. I have listened to this tune over and over. Nice changes and tempo.

Well, have I convinced you? If not, pick up this disc and let Andrea Brachfeld and the Phoenix rising Latin Ensemble speak for themselves. I mean, when was the last time you listened to some pure, clean music that inspired and invigorated you at the same time? Enjoy.

David Gonzalez "Jazz Mex" Meridian Records

Take finger popping Jazz and stir in lush Latin Rhythm and what have you got? Nice stuff uh? Well, take that and add some tasty and creative arrangements and then the icing on the cake, a well seasoned, talented vocalist and you have some true musical magic. David Gonzalez is the creator of some true musical magic on his disc "Jazz Mex." Born in San Francisco to 1st generation San Franciscans of Mexican Heritage, this exquisite vocalist along with his group of top notch musicians create some "Pan Dulce" for your ears. I say that because, growing up as kids we always thought of "Pan Dulce" (Mexican sweet bread) as being a treat. This CD of classic material is a definite treat for anyone that listens.

The CD starts off with a beautiful medley from the book of George Gershwin. "It ain't necessarily so"starts off with a sassy Latin strut led by the horn section and flows with a nice cha-cha feel. The tune then takes a on a different feel with "There's a boat that's leavin soon for New York." Pure genius! This Gershwin classic sways in a classy Jazz setting. "All the things you are" & "Yesterdays" both from the book of that master duo of Jerome Kern and Oscar Hammerstein, both take on a fine new form with melodic groove from the horns and rhythm section.

David's absolute gorgeous vocals bring these tunes some Latin swing!Very reminiscent of the way Latin Jazz master Cal Tjader's early releases on Fantasy brought out the swing in those tunes. Remember those red vinyl albums? The CD also features an absolute beautiful rendition of Mark Levine's Latin Jazz staple tune "Linda Chicana." Besides the fact that this tune is this writer's favorite Latin Jazz number, David's lyrics add a touch of brilliance to this timeless tune. This version is destined to become a much sought after recording and alone is worth the price of admission. A ìright onî conga solo compliments this smooth Cha-Cha by Mr. Michael Spiro. This diverse and sophisticated CD also features some delicious ballads.

"Once I loved" by the talented Ray Gilbert allows you to close your eyes and drift into a wonderful daydream as David's vocals capture you. Another recognizable tune is the Flip Nunez "Love Not Then" that was most notably recorded by the powerhouse Latin Jazz/Latin rock bay area band of the 70's Azteca. The bay area has a rich music tradition and has long been known for turning out the tastiest Latin Jazz around. Don't believe me?

Then check these names out; Benny Velarde, Carlos Federico,Cal Tjader, (The Escovedo's Pete, Coke and Sheila E), Mark Levine, Wayne Wallace shall I go on? Or are you convinced? Well one thing is for sure, David Gonzalez's "JazzMex" solidifies my opinion. A swinging band of accomplished, respected musicians along with a creative lyricist/vocalist. Yeah I would add him to that list! Did I awaken your appetite for some musical "Pan Dulce?"
